How do we identify ourselves as "Americans"? How might our culture connect to others (specifically Japan)?

We identify ourselves as "Americans" by though a combination of various cultures. We all eat different types of foods. In America, there are common American food such as hamburgers and hotdogs, but most of us eat the traditional foods from our native country. In Newark, there are many Portuguese and Spanish restaurants, so we mostly eat Spanish and Portuguese food. The food that we eat is sea food, rice, barbeque meat, chicken, etc. We also have different religions here in America, just like in Japan. In the Ironbound section of Newark, the most common churches are Christian churches, Catholic, Presbyterian, and Pentecostal. The reason being is that this community is compiled of mostly Hispanic people, and they were raised through the Christian religion. We respect the culture of America. We salute the flag every morning and sing the National Anthem. We take pride in our soldiers who are fighting for freedom. We are proud to be American!

Similar to patriotic Americans, the Japanese also respect their culture. The Japanese are very respectful and patriotic. We have similarities and difference. We eat different food, have different religions, and speak different languages. Thus, we are the same in many ways. Above all, we are all human beings, and that’s what matters the most. We need to respect each other, our ideas, thoughts, and differences. Through respect, we need to commit to PEACE!

In my opinion, we identify ourselves as “Americans” because we live and follow all the American customs. American is known for having a large mixture of various cultures. America welcomes immigrants to live here; approximately 60% of America is home to immigrants so that’s why America is such a unique country. In my belief, to be an American is to have pride and love your country. Our culture can also relate to Japan’s culture. We both have pride in our country and will do anything to support our country’s traditions and culture. Japan has many traditional dishes that influenced America. We both share ideas with one another. America has influenced Japan and Japan has influenced America in various ways, though clothing, food, holidays, and beliefs.

We identify ourselves as “American” because we celebrate American holidays and encompass different traditions and customs. For example, Americans celebrate Thanksgiving Day. Americans celebrate this holiday by eating lots and lots of food, including turkey with cranberry sauce and stuffing, mashed potatoes with gravy, vegetables, and for dessert, apple and pumpkin pie. This is considered a typical American dinner during Thanksgiving Day. We also put decorations, which include turkeys, leaves, and pilgrims. The table is nicely set and we say a prayer before we eat. This celebration only takes place in the U.S. Thus, this feast is a part of American culture.

Our culture connects to Japanese culture because sometimes we eat similar foods, we dress similar; celebrate some of the same holidays. For example, the Japanese celebrate New Years, Valentine’s Day, and more. Some can speak both languages. Another way we identify ourselves as “American” is because we care for our country. For example, I am Portuguese but since I’m living in America I learn about my country’s history. Everyday, we salute the flag for this country and for the soldiers at war and the ones that dies for us. Japanese people also show great respect for their country. They are very polite and take great pride in what they do.

We identify ourselves as Americans by living in this country. I am American, my parents are not from here and they live with me here, and they do not consider themselves Americans.. If we live here and we were not born here, we are not considered as Americans. For example, my parents are from Peru and they consider themselves as Peruvians not as full Americans but part American. Though they are originally Peruvians they follow many American customs. During the holidays, we celebrate as if we were living in Peru. We eat traditionally Peruvian meals, listen to Spanish music and speak Spanish too.

The foods that we eat in America are different kinds of food, like Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Italian, and Japanese. Thus, American food is a mix of other countries’ foods. A lot of countries have different religions. My culture will not be the same as Japan because in Japan they celebrate a lot of religious holidays and my country doesn’t have that many. Here in America we eat different kinds of foods, for instance hamburgers and other fast foods. You can find these types of food all over the world. For example, we can find McDonald’s restaurants all over the world, in Japan, Ecuador, Peru and other places.

We identify ourselves as Americans by enhancing American culture. We eat American food; most of us eat hamburgers, hot dogs, cheese steaks, etc. We pursue its culture by speaking and reading English. We go to American schools and salute the flag. We show pride in our country and thank our soldiers. Also we have freedom and equal rights. I really consider myself as an American because I follow the American culture.

Our culture connects to others (specifically) Japan by us having creative fashion. We share similar religious beliefs, some Japanese are Christian and some Americans are Buddhist. Also we have cherry blossoms from Japan. Branch Brook Park in Newark, NJ is filled with lovely cherry blossoms. We eat sushi in restaurants. America has a lot Japanese Americans here. We have a lot of things in common with Japan like they gave as Cherry Blossoms Trees as a gift from Japan we should give them a Bald Eagle which means freedom, so they can remember us.

We identify ourselves as Americans by having our rights, freedom and by respecting others. Thus, there is no such thing as an American, only people that live there. People who migrated to America feel free; that is why they came to America. Many people respect each other in this country. No one in this universe that truly lives in America is American. People come from different countries and they follow their native country’s culture and religion.

In America and in Japan they respect others. Americans demonstrate respect for their country by saluting the flag and singing the National Anthem. We sing the Star Spangled Banner in every sports game. We stand united in the good times and the bad. In Japanese, they demonstrate respect various ways. When the Japanese greet each other, they bow. They especially respect their elders. They are very polite and quite in school and show their teachers respect. In America we eat our food from where ever we come from. They do that too in Japan.

I identify myself as an American by celebrating the American holidays, respecting American culture and of course speaking the language. Also since my family lives in America, they pay taxes. That definitely shows that we are American.

Our culture connects to other cultures like Japan because America and Japan respect their cultures very much. We always celebrate our holidays. The food that we eat is various, like Japan. Also just like Japan, America takes education very seriously.

For me, how I identify myself as American is where I am from, what I do, why I do certain things, who I associate with. I was born in this country. Being born in America gives me the privilege to be free and have freedom. We are lucky to have freedom because in other countries you can’t stand up for your beliefs. Americans also speak English. In school and with my friends I speak English. At home, I speak English, but mostly Spanish since my parents were not born in America. How my culture connects Japan’s is that there is that here in the U.S. we eat Japanese food. Teens can relate to Japanese culture through Manga. We also connect because they eat a lot of the foods we eat here, such as seafood. Our cultures also connect because some of us are a mixture of Japanese and American culture. We are also similar because we go to school with students from other countries. We are also respectful and respect our flags.

From my point of view, I personally suggest there is no one such notion of an American. America is influenced by many different cultures and different traditions. The American culture is influenced by many cultures since most Americans are immigrants. If you walk down Ferry Street in Newark, NJ, you can see the mix of people from different parts of the world. In Ferry St., there are also many different restaurants that serve food from different countries, including Ecuador, Mexico, Portugal, Spain, and China. People from out of town and those of various nationalities come here to try these tasty delicious foods.

Our culture connects to others, for instance Japan. Japan has cultures and traditional dishes such as sushi that is in America which is Japanification. Sushi is a favorite food of many people. Also the cherry blossom is a traditional flower and it’s being influenced in America. My family and I have been influenced by American culture. For instances we all have been influenced with other cultures and traditions. We eat Japanese food, Brazilians, Spanish, because there are so many restaurants around us that are Spanish. So that how Japan and America are the same and different.

We identify ourselves as Americans because we were born in the country. I was born in America so I represent myself as an American. Another reason I can identify myself as an America is I speak the American language, also known as English. I prefer living in my native country but inside I am truly 100% American by heart. That’s how I identify myself as an American. Some cultures connect to other countries, there are some people from other countries that come to America and celebrate there culture in America. For example, Three Kings Day is when all Hispanic people celebrate on January 6. This is a Latin holiday, but is still celebrated in the United States.

I identify myself as an “American” because I eat the typical American food, such as hot dogs and hamburgers. I participate in American celebrations and festivities that are not celebrated anywhere else in the world, such as Halloween and Martin Luther King Day. Also, I learned much history in our country, good memories and bad. Our culture connects to others, such as Japan through its food and education. Food, we eat some seafood of Japan. Some of us go to Japanese restaurants, including Hibachi grills, and some like to eat sushi. In the U.S. we learn about Japan. We learn about their education, their customs, traditions, religion, fashion, etc. Being American is not something to be ashamed of. What do you consider yourself as?

To me an American is someone that was born in America. They don’t necessarily need to have a family that was born here to be Americans. Many of my classmates are American and most of their parents are immigrants from other countries, including Spain, Mexico, Ecuador, Portugal, and Brazil. To be an American means to have pride and show respect for our country. One way to show pride is to thank a soldier for fighting for our freedom. Another way is saluting the flag and singing the national anthem. To be considered an American, They also need to speak English as well. In many households, another language is spoken besides English. Thus, we all speak English in school. Some of the cultural connections between Japan and the US are our commitment to our culture. We connect through our food, education, clothing, and history.

As an American I consider myself loyal to my country. How we identify ourselves as Americans is by being brave and standing up for the country we were born. It’s having the ability to preserve freedom, and life liberty in this land. How our culture connects to others is we both share kind of similar behaviors, education, food and much more.

I have many feelings of being an American, I love to be an American and I love how America influences everybody. As Americans we fight for our country and die with respect. This can be like Japan because many Japanese died for their country, for example the kamikaze died with honor fighting for their country. This is for all the countries in the world, to die with honor.
America is a country you should be very proud of and also you should be very proud of being American.

Even though my parents live in America, they don’t consider themselves Americans. They were born and raised in the Dominican Republic and consider themselves Dominicans. And the language we speak is Spanish and everywhere we go we talk Spanish. And the food we eat is a lot of goods such as platano con salami, banana, and a lot of really good foods. And in church we talk Spanish a lot. In holidays we celebrate Christmas, Halloween, thanksgiving, and new years.

As Americans, we many different culture, religions, and backgrounds which make America a diverse country. We can consider ourselves Americans because we have the rights to live freely in this country. All Americans have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness which means that we have the right to live as an American, our culture connects to Japanese culture in various ways. For instance, American culture parallels to Japanese culture in foods, clothing, and education. We parallel to Japanese culture in food such as fast food restaurant like mc Donald’s. We connect to Japan in education because in both cultures all children attend to school. Both cultures parallel as Japanese and American citizens.

We identify our selves as Americans because we celebrate holiday. We enjoy culture. I believe that our culture might connect to Japan. We can make it connect because we both celebrate holidays; they share their culture with us because they gave use to the cherry blossom. They have a cherry blossom festival like we do.

I identify myself as an American by standing up for myself. Not letting anyone talk bad about my country where I was born and raised in America. Also not being ashamed of my country. Our culture connects to Japan in many ways. A sport like soccer was here and in Japan. The police men night stick is from the Japanese samurai sword.

I believe that I am an American because I show that I am a hard worker and I am a citizen. To be an American you have to earn it. I believe that people claim their American but they don’t work for it. Papers don’t mean anything. How you show you are American is important.

A true American is someone who has ancestors were first to live here. They originated from America. I don’t consider myself American because my family is from Spain. Our culture can learn about our culture and they can learn about ours.
